Formal Autism Diagnostic Assessment

What to expect

The diagnostic assessment is usually held over two appointments and will include:

The formal diagnostic assessment adheres to the SIGN and NICE guidelines and we are fully registered with the regulatory body – Health and Care Professionals Council (HCPC).

The Assessment Process

Following the initial consultation the ADOS-2 Assessment will be administered this is a semi structured, standardised assessment which is designed to identify behaviours that are typically related to a diagnosis of Autism. This assessment is considered a gold standard instrument recommended in the current national guidelines and both clinicians are present during this assessment. The observational assessment involves carrying out various tasks/ activities and discussion/questions. The assessment is carried out by a lead clinician and attended by the second clinician. This allows both clinicians to observe the ADOS-2 and complete the scoring at the end.

Following the completion of the assessment, you will be offered a break whilst the clinicians discuss the information gathered and the ADOS-2 outcome. The information is then considered in line with the current ICD-11 and DSM-V criteria for autism spectrum disorder and a decision is usually reached regarding diagnosis.

The clinicians will then share the outcome of the assessment and provide an opportunity for discussion. This feedback session usually lasts around 45 minutes to an hour. We are also available for follow up questions if required.

The outcome of the assessment may or may not confirm a diagnosis of autism. If a diagnosis is not confirmed, we will provide information about how we came to the decision and discuss other possible explanations for your profile.
